• COVID-19 is the disease that is caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2, which shares characteristics both in symptoms and genetics to other viruses of past outbreaks (e.g., SARs, MERS) • Separate tests are used to diagnose sick patients versus testing to see if someone without symptoms was previously infected. Understanding these tests can be challenging, and accessing them if you are sick or think you were exposed can be even more difficult. • In this edition of Demystifying COVID-19 Testing, we introduce the basics of the virus, the disease it causes, and the types of tests you need to know about.
